That is only if it is not in use which could be a costly mistake with a manual trans. Let's say you are parked on a gentle slope. You start to get your mack on and realize the brake handle is cramping your game, so you dissengage it to clear access to your partner. In the heat of passion the shift lever is kicked or nudged out of gear and the two of you are rolling along totally unaware until you suddenly crash into something.
