Well if you have enough wind going over a piece of ply wood it will eventually fly but not very well or efficiently. A wing is designed for air to pass over it in one direction. If you blow air over it backwards it will basically be like the piece of ply wood; eventually w/ enough wind it will fly but not very well or for very long in a controlled manner.

I'm surprised this thread is still alive. I didn't see the episode but according to the website the myth is busted and the plane did take off just fine.
