Ahhh but they do put them under the rear.

In Australia anyways.

There is a 65 litre tank I can get to sit in the spare wheel well, this retains the spare tyre mount, so the spare doesnt have to sit into the tray just hangs a touch lower.

No photo of it on the web site but here is their spruik

Navara D40 65Lt Aux Tank
FTN51aux
General Description
Nissan Navara D40 65 Lt Auxiliary Tank (Stainless Steel)
Detailed Description

Technical Specifications
Suits Petrol & Diesel, Will NOT fit 2WD models This 65 litre Auxiliary tank is made from stainless steel and fits above the spare wheel (the spare wheel is retained in the same location and then winches up under the tank) The tank is filled via the standard filler (no holes or extra caps etc) and the fuel is fed into the main fuel tank via a hose using gravity. So in operation it is just like having one larger fuel tank. The filling, usage and even the fuel gauge all work just as in the standard vehicle except of course the fuel gauge takes longer to get to empty.
