I did run extended intervals of 12k on it, and when the oil came out, it looked like brand new Mobil 1. No thick sludge, not burnt, not black. Just a nice golden color. So I attribute the clicking lifters to piss-poor Mitsubishi designs. Other than the lifters, the car ran like a champ.
My Fronty has had Mobil 1 from day one. Just like my Mitsu, I drove it home and changed the oil out for Mobil 1. No problems so far, and I change it every 5k with either a Nissan or Napa Gold filter. Currently I have about 41k on the odo.
My wife VW requires some crazy VW oil standard, that is only met by Castrol. Unless you wanna pay for Amsoil or some other ridiculously expensive Euro oils. So I use the Syntec 5w-40. Change it every 5k with either a Napa or VW filter. Car has about 96k on it, and runs like a dream.
So with that said, do I think Amsoil has a good product? For the price they better! All I can say is that from personal experience, you can't go wrong with RP, M1, or Syntec. So it's pretty much up to you how much you are willing to fork out for oil.

Exactly what I was thinking! Those who are loyal to a specific brand should stick with what they are loyal to. Synthetics are better than conventional. That is for sure!
If you dont want to pay a higher price for Amsoil or RP, then go with Castrol or Mobile 1. They are still going to be better than regular conventional oil. Whatever makes you happy is what you should get. I'm a Castrol Guy and always have been, so I will just switch to the Full Synthetic Castrol Syntec and I'm sure I will be better off.
