Although I believe here in Australia, we have a slightly different octane rating scale to you guys in the US. but anyway...
92 = regular unleaded
95 = premium unleaded
98 = high octane unleaded
My previous car was designed to use 95 octane fuel. But using 98 octane fuel in the same car gave a slight increase in power (measured on a Dyno) and significantly increased fuel economy. Im talking around a 150Km extra out of a tank on the highway. The tank was 50 litres in capacity.
It does depend on what the engine is like though. Some cars you will get no change, but some you will. Mine did.

unless your previous car was supercharged... the dyno results you experienced are the only one i have ever heard of that did not show the exact opposite.
