Use the Quik-clay system by Meguiars I think. Its really easy, and the results are great. You just spray on the quick detail spray and rub the clay over it. Then wipe it dry w/ a shop towel or terry cloth. I spent just over an hour maybe, but the results were great. A few weeks later, and it is still smoother than if I had waxed it. The water beads right off and it feels like glass. You've got nothing to lose except $10 and a little time. As for surface scrathces, use GS-27. I know, its one of those as seen on tv things, but it really works. I use if everytime I get back from offroading. It will blend any paint color if you do it correctly.
